Foods to test

you can skip this post folks, boooring .. :-)

==== I wish to further test the following ====

  • Cottage Cheese. Dragon finds this to be ok.
  • Peas. Dragonslayer reckons some varieties are ok. Otherwise known as 'petit-pois'
  • Carrots. Try skinning these
  • tempe
  • baby corn. apparently has almost no starch
  • pumpkin
  • fruit and nuts. Perhaps nuts are safer on their own. I believe that I may react moderately when nuts are mixed with sweet foods. Would not be surprising as mixing protein, fat and sugar all at once is surely going to feed unfriendly gut flora. Similar to what happens when mixing butter or cream with sugar..
  • green beans
  • zuchini
  • wine, vinegar, etc - need more testing
vinegar is so common in condiments, so must be tested!
  • Pectin. This should be a safe low GI food, and perhaps beneficial to the gut flora?
  • mushrooms - these are ok
  • rice, rice cakes, rice pudding, rice sponge cake
  • brown rice : dotyisle says he can tolerate this better than white rice
  • psyllium husks
  • short grain rice : ted reckons this is safer
  • vegies: zuccini, yellow squash, red/green peppers
  • Nuts and seeds : sesame, pine nuts, macadamia, walnuts..
John apparently finds sunflower seeds to be ok ?
Peanuts should not be safe but I would like to test them anyway.
  • Onions: have reacted very badly in the past to onions but would like to retest anyway
  • Dairy, Hard Cheeses, Kefir
Butter and Cream should be tolerated much better, but I still need to test it myself.
Test cottage cheese since it is on the list of safe foods but I doubt it is ok for those who react to dairy.
  • Avocado
  • Tapioca
  • Yeast derived foods : many yeast derived foods seem to be a problem eg: Wine, Beer, Vinegar, Cheese, Vegemite.. except for mushrooms??
  • Quinoa
  • Legumes, Lentils, Beans.
I would be very happy if I could tolerate these. Also experiment with different ways of preparing these.
Aparrently Jan (twisks) eats lentils (without much issue?)
  • Maltodextrin
    Pello reacted to Maltodextrin
  • Try cooking starchy apples - eg: bakes, stewed, or fried in butter. Does the starch in this fruit convert to simple sugars under high heat? Is the starch more easily tolerated when cooked?. (ok, I have now tried it and I don't think it helps to cook them)
  • Guar Gum

5 - Hi Zark

As a long term AS sufferer I have been reading your site with interest. Have you come accross the Joel Godin diet? I was wondering if yours is the same/similar as he charges $ to obtain the book, whereas, thankfully, you generously share your info freely with the rest of us.

6 - I've been a detective lately about observing everything I eat. Your site is so clear cut and organized so beautifully. I'm on my second day of apples only and plan on introducing one thing at a time until I figure this out. Thanks for sharing and leading the way!

Pretty sure it is the same. Almost a certainty. He used to have a spot on his site where people would add comments.. eventually some folks started posting links to the NSD Forum on www.kickas.org which also gives this spondylitis dietary advice for free. Little doubt this is why that section of his website promptly disappeared ;-)

Here is his website for those who want to know:
http://www.ankylosingspondylitishelp.com/

I choose to give this information freely. But I have no animosity towards Joel for choosing to charge money. Even though he is profiting from the work of others such as John (Dragonslayer), Alan Ebringer, and others. And still that doesn't make me angry.. though I do hope he gives credit where credit is due. I profit from the work of others just by following this diet. I profit from the hard work of engineers, electricians and physicists every time I use the internet :-) (Comment this)

9 - I am a twenty year old dude in Sweden just diagnosed with AS. I've have been home from work and basically spending my hours reading and sleeping. I have read lots.
It seems to me this online list by Zark is quite effective since you (Zark) seem to have a great collection of food allergies - thereby narrowing down the list of offendible foods to a hard core of really safe ones. The list has also not been put forward from vague theoretical reasoning but empirical evidence coming from pain in its purest form.

Elaine at www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info forbids for example aloe vera and algae spirulina because they stimulates the immune system, and really, our immune system need to be held "unstimulated"?
Garlic and ginger both stimulate the immune system but does not seem to cause damage of any kind. On the contrary.

I want to do a chlorella cleanse but I am too afraid...

I have come to the conclusion that certain steps needs to be fulfilled for AS to take place. If even one of these steps fail, AS will not evolve. And, for the unbelievers, AS if not an incurable disease, it's a symptom.

This has to happen:
1: Due to food allergies (protein casein, lactose, gluten, starch, hormones in milk products) we are unaware of or too lazy to do anything about slight inflammation will take place along the intestinal tract.
This will aid bad bacteria.

2: Once the healthy bacterial flow in disturbed, klebsiella and other common micro organisms like candida will be allowed to grow to make us even more susceptible to parasites bad bacteria’s etc. This is a negative spiral which takes place under a lot of years.

(During all these years, we will have something of an undiagnosed Crohns disease, which in research has been linked very closely together with AS.)

3: The bacteria klebsiella will now "leak" our of the guts through patches if inflammatory intestine invading also the blood.

4: In Chinese medicine, they said reason behind this reason behind this disease is always kidney dysfunction.
So possible will also the kidneys have to fail cleansing the blood for the bacteria. If kidney fails that, we have step 5.

5: Klebsiella is now unleashed in blood and the body tries mercilessly to defeat it, the battle arena has expanded incorporating the bloodstream as well.

6: If we now add and antigen called HBL-27, our immune system will recognize klebsiella as another particle (don't know or know if they know what it is) being a building block in joint tissues the bacteria removed, however, no joint damage will occur.

Thank you for your time.
Please DO write me.

10 - Hi Theo,

Thanks for your comments! They are well researched and constructive.

I don't consider my food problems to be an allergy in the medical sense of the word, ie: I do not (as far as I know) react to proteins (antigen) in the foods I eat. So this would be classed as a 'food sensitivity' in a similar sense to lactose intolerance, in which case you could say that I am 'starch intolerant'.

Unfortunately I do not have time discuss other points of interest to me at this time.. I hope I remember to get back to you some time soon.

PS: I do not recommend posting your email address in such a public way on any forum as email spammers use scripts to scan forums and collect everything that looks likke an email address..

Wishing you health and hoping that you make lots of progress in your research :-)
